The Importance of Non-Essentials

My wife and I were nominated to become deacons in our church recently. We haven’t been officially accepted yet because an elder or two want to interview us. We haven’t officially accepted yet either because it is reintroducing some doctrinal/theological differences we have with the church that we had swept under the “non-essentials” carpet for the last year and half.

One primary difference is the issue of female leadership—I did an irreverent, but rigorous, study back then and summarized my results here and I invite you to please add your comments there. I could “watchfully submit” to a male-only elder board then, but can we do that as we actually join church leadership? That is the question.

It irks me to have to deal with this again, but there it is. I very much like what the church is up to in general and they have moved a long way down this very road (women deacons at the table with the elders), so do we compromise on an important non-essential? Do we join and help continue to change the culture? My gut says yes!
